# Driving lesson cost estimator

Estimate what the driving lessons behind your licence cost where you live. Pick your region, the length of one lesson and the price you were quoted. The tool turns the official lesson hours into a number of lessons and multiplies it by your price.

Use the tool on the [web page](https://drivingschools.fyi/tools/lesson-cost-estimator). It works without JavaScript.

## How to use it

1. Choose where are you learning?.
2. Choose how long is one lesson?.
3. Enter price per lesson.
4. Enter extra lessons on top.
5. Read the result.

## How it works

The tool turns one official figure of lesson hours into whole lessons of the length you pick, adds your extra lessons, and multiplies the total by the price you type. The tool shows plain numbers, not a currency symbol: the result is in the same currency as the price you type.

United Kingdom: no required minimum. The published average is 45 hours of lessons plus 22 hours of private practice (DVSA, via GOV.UK, Open Government Licence): https://www.gov.uk/driving-lessons-learning-to-drive/taking-driving-lessons

Ireland: 12 mandatory one-hour Essential Driver Training sessions with an approved driving instructor (Road Safety Authority): https://www.rsa.ie/services/learner-drivers/essential-driver-training

Germany: at least 12 special drives (Sonderfahrten, 45 minutes each, counted here as 9 hours) plus the required theory classes for a class B licence (Fahrerlaubnis-Verordnung): https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/fev_2010/

California, United States: under-18s need 6 hours of professional driver training plus 50 hours of supervised practice, 10 of them at night (California DMV): https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/

Ontario, Canada: a ministry-approved Beginner Driver Education course has 40 hours in total: 20 theory, 10 in-car and 10 flexible instruction (Government of Ontario): https://www.ontario.ca/page/government-approved-driving-schools

New South Wales, Australia: no lessons are required. Under-25s must log 120 supervised driving hours, 20 of them at night; up to 10 hours with a professional instructor count triple in the log book. The tool uses those 10 hours as its figure, so it shows the most the credit can cost (Transport for NSW): https://www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/driver-and-rider-licences/driver-licences/learner-driver-licence/using-your-learner-driver-log-book

> Planning figures only. The tool multiplies an official lesson-hours figure by the price you type. Rules and prices change, and your instructor may say you need more or fewer lessons than the figure shown. Confirm everything with the school and your licensing authority.

## Questions

### Why does the estimate use different hours per region?

Each region publishes a different figure: an average (England), a required minimum (Ireland and Germany), the in-car part of a course (Ontario), required professional hours (California) or optional lesson credits (New South Wales). The tool shows the hours behind the maths so you can check it.

### Is supervised practice included?

No. Practice with family or a supervising driver is usually free, so it is not priced here. The rule line says how much practice each region asks for.

### What else should I budget for?

Theory and practical test fees, the licence itself, and sometimes a car for the test. These are not in the estimate; your licensing authority lists them.
